Channel Selector Portal and App

The sector regulator said that its new framework gave the customers the freedom to select what they wanted to watch. It said that it had noticed that users were not able to freely select the channels/bouquets they wanted. As such, in June last year, TRAI had launched the Channel Selector App.

Incidentally, TRAI also made amendments to Interconnection Regulations of 2017 for Broadcasting and Cable Services earlier this month. The portal launch has come with TRAI saying "transparency and consumer protection are important mandates for TRAI".

TRAI said that users could register on the Channel Selector Portal and App via their registered mobile numbers. After starting registration, the user will receive an OTP to complete the process. TRAI said that it had published the app on both Google Play and Apple App Store.

With the launch of this portal, TRAI looks to aim at customers who don't have a smartphone, or want to use web browsers instead of the app. The sector regulator said that the portal has all the features of the app, along with various new features. These include:

  • Allowing users to check their subscriptions
  • Modify/Change existing subscriptions
  • Check real-time status of applied subscriptions
  • Viewing all Channels/Bouquets their service provider offers
  • Remove unwanted channels
  • Optimize channel selection
  • Facility to add channels in the applicable NCF.

TRAI also said that users can provide feedback on the portal. Right now, there are 16 DTH and MSO/Cable operators on the portal. The sector regulator has said that it is working to add more, with time.
