RJio to provide 4G wi-fi services through street lights

NEW DELHI: Telecom services provider Reliance Jio Infocomm is seeking permission to offer 4G Wi-Fi services using Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) Undertaking's street light poles in Mumbai, media reports said.

The reports said that the telco has given a proposal to BEST asking to hire spaces on the street poles to install the equipment to provide 4G services to the masse. The equipment consists of 4G LTE small cell, integrated kiosks outdoor Wi-Fi apps and will use unlicensed band radio.

The telco is planning to install 4G equipment over 215 lamp posts in Mumbai's 'D' ward and would position its 4G equipment on 25 poles initially to test the availability and performance of the 4G services.

It would be rolling out its 4G services before the second half of this year. The company recently soft launched its LTE service in Gujarat at the Vibrant Gujarat Global Trade Show.
