So, how does this work? What are these Google 3D Animals?  The Google 3D animals is an AR system that projects the creature into your phone’s screen. By seeing things in AR, users can see the scale of an object and also details they might not notice from a static image. The Augmented Reality technology by Google gives a really immersive feel with the 'sense of scale and detail” gained by seeing an animal in an environment - be it in your living room or study.  According to 9to5Google, the trick works for alpine goats, angler fish, bears, emperor penguins, European hedgehogs, lions, tigers, and timberwolves, deadly snakes, cheetahs, and many more wild animals.

To use this feature:

  1. Google search an animal, for example: ‘cheetah’.
  2. Just underneath the image search results and the Wikipedia description of the panda, you’ll be able to see a little box that says, “Meet a cheetah panda up close”.
  3. You’ll need to give Google access to your camera for it to be able to insert the cheetah into your space.
  4. Click the ‘view in 3D’ button, then click ‘view in your space’ to see the cheetah in the background/surroundings of your choice.
