New Delhi: Search engine giant Google has announced the addition of Indian Railways schedules as well as updated public transport information for eight Indian cities to Google Maps Transit.
Google Transit is a feature in Google Maps which helps plan public transport trips and is available on Google Maps on an Android or iOS device, as well as on a desktop.
This feature will allow people to see information for 12,000 trains, and updated details for bus and metro routes from Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune.
To plan a trip with Google Transit, one can type destination name into Google Maps, click on the “Get Directions” button and then select the “Public Transit” icon to find which metro, train or bus options are available. Google Maps will then display door-to-door directions to the destination with the public transport options available including walking directions to and from transit points. One can also choose the preferred mode of transport, for example bus, metro or train, and set the time to depart or arrive, a release said.
“Google Transit is part of our effort to make Google Maps more comprehensive, accurate and useful for millions of people around the world who take buses, trains, metros or trams to their next destination. We hope that the addition of the Indian Railways schedules pan-India and updated information for eight cities to Google Transit in India will make it a little easier to plan your next trip,” said Suren Ruhela, Director, Program Management, Google Maps.
Today, Google Maps has public transportation schedules for more than one million transit stops worldwide, in 2,800 cities including New York, London, Tokyo and Sydney. Since 2005, Google has collaborated with hundreds of public transit agencies worldwide to make their schedule information accessible to all Google Maps users.
