The companies have a history of teaming up together. Earlier, they partnered to develop an "open and interoperable" interface-compliant architecture-based 5G solutions with a virtualized RAN. With this solution, the companies had achieved over a 1 Gbps throughput on the Jio 5G NR solution using the chipmaker's 5G RAN Platforms last year. Qualcomm also invested $97 million in Jio Platforms last year. However, Qualcomm also partnered with Bharti Airtel as well to facilitate its 5G rollout in India. Airtel will also use Qualcomm's 5G RAN solution for their network core.

In some good news for the largest telco in the country, Jio has already developed an end-to-end 5G stack. This includes 5G radio and core network solutions. Also, the telco has already completed its testing and can rollout 5G while being self-sufficient and cost-effective.

Right now, along with 12 other participants, Reliance Jio is preparing for 5G trials. It has received trial spectrum from the telecom department as well. The telco is coming with its own 5G tech, but will also leverage tech from its 4G partner Samsung and Ericsson and Nokia.

In its annual report, RIL said, "India is at the forefront of the global digital revolution. Jio is accelerating the rollout of digital platforms and indigenously developed next-generation 5G stack, making it affordable and available everywhere".

The company further added that the telco's radio frequency capacity and coverage for 5G is already underway. It has based the same on 4G data traffic profile. RIL also revealed that Jio Platforms is also working with OEMs so that it can standardize 5G device configurations.

"With 5G, Indian subscribers will experience the benefits of higher data rates, low latency and enhanced digital experiences for a wide variety of devices", the company said.
