Reliance Jio added the most active mobile users in January 2023, among the main Indian telcos, which according to analysts, was aided by significant growth in Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. They continued by saying that this showed that Jio was attracting high-caliber clients and was unaffected by the industry's SIM consolidation.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI)'s most recent consumer data revealed that Jio added 3.5 million active subscribers in January, bringing its active user count to 394 million. One of the most crucial metrics for the telecom operators to measure performance is the addition or deduction of visitor location register (VLR) or active subscribers.The number of users actively utilising a mobile network is reflected in the active or VLR statistics released by TRAI each month.

Competitor Bharti Airtel added active users at a balanced but slower rate of 1.3 million, bringing its total number of active users in January to 366 million. On the other hand, the third main Indian telco, Vodafone Idea's base fell to 209 million as it lost another 0.5 million active users.

With a 38.5% share of the active subscriber market in January compared to Airtel's 35.7%, Jio increased its lead over the Sunil Mittal-owned carrier. The active user share for Vi, which is losing money, had a little decline in active user share, down to 20.4%.

With the net gains of Jio and Airtel, the total number of active users in the telecom sector increased by almost 4 million, month over month to 1025 million. Reliance Jio added 3.49 million active subscribers on a month-on-month basis, Airtel added 1.32 million, Vodafone Idea lost 0.46 million and BSNL lost 0.42 million and BSNL recorded 54.32 million user base in total.
