Huawei $170 mn R&D campus opens in Bengaluru

BENGALURU: ICT solutions provider Huawei has declared open its new Research & Development (R&D) campus in Bengaluru. The company is focused on contributing to India government’s flag-ship project 'Make in India'.

The one million sq. ft. campus built on a 20 acre land will accommodate Huawei’s growing software development workforce in India. The campus can accommodate up to 5,000 engineers and includes an R&D Block, customer experience center, large cafeteria, multilevel car park and residential block for expat employees. Huawei has invested over $170 million in building the new campus in Bengaluru.

The new R&D center being the first by a Chinese company in India exhibits close cooperation between India and China in the field of ICT. It is aimed at playing a bigger role in the innovation journey of Huawei; creation of future-oriented technologies, generating patents from India, contributing to industry standardization, collaborating with peers  and academia in R&D and support the digital transformation of the society, a release said.

Huawei’s journey of globalization began with the first overseas research and development center being set up in Bengaluru in 1999, with a handful of engineers. Today, the company boasts of 2,700 engineers, out of which more than 98% are local employees including leadership roles. It is also the largest and the most important R&D center of Huawei, outside of China.

Huawei has established the Bengaluru R&D center as the main development and delivery center of Huawei for global customers and effectively supported Huawei’s growth to reach $46 billion in revenue.

Wilson Wang, Chief Operating Officer (COO), Huawei India Research and Development (R & D) Center, said, “This center can accommodate nearly 5,000 software engineers, and we are confident that it will play a bigger role in the innovation journey of Huawei; create future-oriented technologies, and support the digital transformation of the society."
