NEW DELHI: Manufacturing is one of the key sectors of the Indian economy and adoption of a wide set of smart technologies in Indian manufacturing will be essential for making the sector globally competitive. Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises Minister Anant Geete said that the government is committed to provide every support to make Indian manufacturing more competitive.
He was delivering the inaugural address at the 1st Smart Manufacturing Summit, with the theme “Make India a global Leader in Manufacturing”, organized by Confederation of Indian Industry at New Delhi.
Addressing the gathering, Geete said that the ‘Make in India’ campaign of the government is the first step in this direction and assured that going forward the results of many more steps taken by the government in various areas would be clearly visible.
The Minister also apprised the gathering of the various steps taken by the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises such as addressing the problems of CPSEs, formulation of the 1st Draft National Capital Goods policy and encouragement of manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles to support the manufacturing growth agenda of the country.
On this occasion, the Minister also released the CII – Roland Berger “Smart Manufacturing 2025 Roadmap”.
Speaking at the Summit, Amitabh Kant, Secretary DIPP, said that Indian manufacturing is on the cusp of a transformation and leveraging advantages of Industry 4.0 will support the faster growth of an efficient and cost competitive manufacturing sector.
India should take the lead in creating a new Industrial Revolution, emphasized Kant.
He stressed on the urgent need for skill transformation to seize this opportunity by creating the relevant technology-driven skill base to drive this revolution.
For this, the technology usage in colleges and schools needs to be aligned to workplace skills requirements, he stressed.
He urged the Industry, academia, R&D institutions to come together and create a multi-disciplinary curriculum and ecosystem to support this transformation.
Speaking at the session, Anant J Talaulicar, Chairman ,CII Manufacturing council and Chairman and Managing Director, Cummins India Ltd said that a shift to smart manufacturing is key for making Indian manufacturing vibrant and competitive.
He highlighted that customized offerings were at the heart of smart manufacturing and had already started taking root in the manufacturing sector globally. There is a need to identify the sectors which would be the champions of this transformation and provide them with the “recipe of success” in terms of an enabling ecosystem to drive this change.
Welcoming the guests to the summit, Jayant Davar, Co-Chairman, CII Manufacturing Council, and Co-Chairman & Managing Director, Sandhar Technologies said that Smart manufacturing is an aspiration for creating a highly competitive Indian way of manufacturing ie “Made in india“ and would rest on the pillars of Make in India, Digital India, Skill India, Start up India etc that together will take Indian manufacturing to the next level.
Putting his perspective on the Smart Manufacturing Roadmap, Rahul Gangal ,Partner, Roland Berger, stated that Smart manufacturing is the next level of the industrial revolution that the global manufacturing is gearing to and would entail full integration and digitalization of the entire value chain.
Speaking earlier at the session, Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General, Confederation of Indian Industry underlined the fact that smart manufacturing which encompasses innovation, entrepreneurship and technology is completely going to revolutionise India’s manufacturing landscape. Calling for a National Action Plan for Smart Manufacturing,
Banerjee stated that Government Industry and Academia must collaborate and ensure that India is ready for this revolution.
