How has NSN India performed in FY 2010-11?
We did pretty good, but there was a bit of slowdown due to the security clause. However, it picked up nicely later on with respect to 3G awards. In India, we are stong on 2G, 3G and managed services. We got good business for packet core (messaging and browsing). We grew faster than the industry which can be judged from the circles where we operate managed services portfolio and packet core customers. On the new operators front, we have a win with everybody.
We have got 21 circles for 3G operations across all operators. Of this 13 are B level circles where there is lot of growth. We have many customers in 2G/3G services. We provide managed services to 7 operators.
What were the innovations behind these numbers?
Innovation depends on services like managed services where one has to retain, build and develop scale through global delivery centers and tools, thereby providing benefits to customers. Various activities like revenue generation for customers, segmentation and prioritization in 3G and putting together end-to-end experiences need to be innovated. India has a large hub with GNOC which acts as a good feeder for low cost models; and this comes together with the unique advantage of manufacturing lot of products in India. So there is a lot of room for innovation with respect to global services, R&D and manufacturing.
How is NSN helping in providing 3G experience to end customers?
In 3G, data traffic is growing and 2% of customers are driving 90% of the traffic. So what do you do in terms of differentiated quality of service. We distinguish pattterns of traffic and tailor our experience according to the differentiated level of service.
Which are the new areas NSN India is focusing on?
First-we are developing our own energy solutions, so we are focusing on green energy. This is a unique offering on top of managed services. Second-we are focusing on planning and optimization where we plan to extract maximum value from 2G/3G traffic pattern-this skill is not easy. Third-we are attending to 3G customers not only in India but also around the world, giving us real-time network planning and optimization expertise which is unique. So we manage 45 circles for managed services.
How do you see LTE deployment in India?
Growth of fixedline is static and cable-to-home is not a growth market from India's point of view, so service providers will invest in LTE by the end of this year. TD-LTE is for heavy data traffic whereas 2G is for basic voice and 3G is for some data and voice.
