Voice & Data organises Telecom Leadership Forum, felicitates stalwarts of the Indian telecom industry

The Indian telecom industry achieved many feats during the year 2012 despite many hiccups. To celebrate the achievements Voice&Data organized Telecom Leadership Awards 2012 at Oberoi hotel in New Delhi on 6th December. The new and renewable energy minister Dr Farooq Abdullah was the Chief Guest of the event. The telecom industry's stalwarts were acknowledged for their outstanding, innovative, and motivational leadership in their ability to steer their businesses through turbulent times, applying the best of business modules to manage and keep their business missions afloat and alongside take the Indian telecommunications to the next level.

The TLF awards was attended by the top executives from the telecoms companies. The awards recognized the efforts of organisations that pushed boundaries and transformed the telecommunications sector. The awards were decided by a panel of Jury chaired by Sanjeev Aga, former MD of Idea Cellular. The other members of the jury included RK Upadhyay, CMD, BSNL, Rajan Mathews, DG, COAI, Rajesh Agarwal, MD, Micromax, Vijay Shekhar Sharma, MD, One97 Communications, Jagannadham Thunuguntla, Equity Head, SMC Capital, Pradeep Gupta, CMD, CyberMedia and Prasanto K Roy, Editorial Advisor, CyberMedia.

TLF recognised great contributions in 11 categories. The Voice&Data Telecom Person of the year award was bagged by Sanjay Kapoor, CEO, Airtel (India & South Asia) Voice&Data Telecom Person of the Year. Anil Tandon, CTO, Idea Cellular bagged Telecom CTO of the year award as it has emerged as a trusted brand in a short time span with over 92% VLR on its network. The Green Telecom Company award was bagged by Vodafone for managing non-hazardous solid waste and for taking initiatives that aims at making this earth a more beautiful place to live. Tikona Digital Networks was recognised as the emerging telecom company for gaining prominence in the broadband segment with a short time frame and for providing connectivity to almost 50% urban buildings in 6 metros and another 55-60% to 19 more tier 1 cities.

The first QuEST Forum India quality award for 2012 was bagged by Bharti Airtel in the top telecom operators category. Top Telecom Software company award was conferred on Tata Consultancy Services for being the first telecom software company in the world to have pioneered implementing advanced surveillance and re-certification procedures method of external audit for TL 9000 that is approved by the ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board (ANAB).

Telecom Services company awards was received by Sanjay Vidyarthi, MD, Telmar India for Telmar Network Technology for being the first Telecom Services Company in the world to have implemented TL9000 within six months of start of its operations in India and consistently delivering Best-in-Class Quality Performance since then.

The Voice&data Chipset Company of the year 2012 in the Smartphones category, on the basis of the highest market share in India for the year 2012 went to Qualcomm. The award was received by Dr. Lakshminath Dondeti (Director, Technology & Standards) at Qualcomm.

The Voice&data Chipset Company of the Year 2012 in the Feature Phones category, again on the basis of the highest market share in India for the year 2012 went to MediaTek. The award received by Anku Jain, Sr Director, Engineering at MediaTek India.

The Most Popular Mobile Phone of the year 2012, on the basis of unit sales in India for the year 2012, went to their popular model Nokia Asha 100. The award was received by Ravi Kunwar, General Manager, Nokia India.

The VAS Company of the year award was received by Mouli Raman, Managing Director, OnMobile India. The company has moved from a Rs 2 crore in 2002 to Rs 600 plus in 2012. The company has come a long way in last two years. And its way ahead of its competitors in terms of both revenue as well as product portfolio. The company has been credited as the pioneer in replacing the old tring-tring to the hugely popular ring back tones. This is also the company that made all VAS players proud by becoming the first VAS player to go public.
