.The key players in the telecom tower business are Indus Towers, ATC, Bharti Infratel, Essar, Reliance Infratel, Quippo and GTL.

.GTL is now the world's largest independent tower company, with 32,500 towers - 15,000 of which were its own, and 17,500 of which belonged to Aircel. GTL plans to roll-out 50,000 towers in the next three years.

.By January 2008, there were over 1.1 lakh towers in the country. To meet the government's target of providing 500 mn telephones by 2010, nearly 3.3 lakh towers will be required in the next three years.

.Erecting one cell site involves an investment of about Rs 30 lakh. For setting up 2.2 lakh more towers in the next three years, Rs 66,000 crore will be required.

.By March 2009 India has as many as 2,58,459 telecom towers. Indus tower a JV between Bharti, Vodafone and Idea is the market leader. Indus tower has 100,000 towers.

.In FY 2008-09, Quippo Telecom Infrastructure (QTIL) entered a strategic partnership with Tata Teleservices. Under this agreement, TTSL and QTIL will swap 51% and 49% stake, respectively.

.India is set to touch 600 mn subscribers by 2011. This means there are close to 1,50,000 more towers needed from the present base of roughly 2,58,000 in next two to three years.
