Wipro struck a couple of key strategic alliances. It signed
an outsourcing deal with Sweden-based SmartTrust that develops software for
telecom service providers. The deal would help Wipro develop device management
software for easier accessibility of content applications on mobile handsets.
The other deal with Axiom leads to providing IP-VPN management solution for a
Nordic solution provider. The other wins include a large field testing contract
from a leading telecom equipment company, and a large multi-million dollar
contract from a global telecom major for setting up and running their next
generation CDMA lab.
'IP
based convergence has changed our business outlook'
How
has Wipro's telecom vertical performed in FY 05-06?
We have done projects in all spectrums of telecom technologies for
communication equipment manufacturers.
In the domestic
market, we have done charging gateway, call barring for a incumbent
service provider, and mediation, and HR portal for network inventory
solution for other top three unified service providers. The leading
clients are BSNL, Hutch, Spice, and Bharti. In APAC and Mid-East we have
done application development and maintenance, and 3G applications testing,
data warehousing, MPLS provisioning, and CRM for various service providers
in the region.

What
is the significance of the deals you made in FY 05-06?
We struck a strategic alliance with Sweden-based SmartTrust with a
focus on market enablers for service providers. The other deal with Axiom
is for providing IP-VPN management solution to a Nordic solution provider,
TeliaSonera, using Axiom as a platform. This is significant as IP is a top
priority for us and we will continue to cater to the system integration (SI)
business in this area.
How
is the revenue split between the domestic and international market?
Over 99% of our product engineering solution for equipment
manufacturer and SI are for international business. Our telecom product
reselling business is predominantly India centric.
Which
areas of telecom service and solutions have shown growth in FY 05-06?
Our growth in product engineering services has come from broadband,
wireless (infrastructure and handset), and IP-Multimedia carrier and
enterprise network. OSS/BSS is the key driver in telecom carrier space. We
are leaders in the implementation of COTS based solutions, which
contributes significantly to the revenue for Wipro. Consultancy is also a
key domain for Wipro where we hope to compete strongly. For Wipro, OEM
segment was a high growth and focus area.
What
is your outlook and strategy for FY 2006-07?
We believe that the industry is moving towards an IP based converged
network encompassing both voice and data. This has mandated a change in
our strategic outlook of the business unit. Therefore, we have realigned
ourselves to focus more on these lines. This has included a change in the
name of the unit from 'Voice and Next generation Networks' to 'ICEN
-IP Multimedia Carrier and Enterprise Networks'. We are also forming
Practice Groups to focus on high-growth segment in the IP Multimedia area
in the Carrier and Enterprise space.
New programs and
initiatives have changed the business mix for Wipro. With next-generation
networks, broadband, and 3G rollouts, the demand for OSS/BSS and network
management is growing rapidly. We see big opportunities working with
network equipment vendors in the build out of 3G network elements. In the
enterprise voice segment, we foresee a market for enterprise collaborating
tools and technologies facilitating transition to SIP-based VoIP in
enterprise. Over the next few years, Wipro plans to invest in all these
new technology areas. |
Its client list consists of nine telecom equipment
manufactures and top five mobile device equipment manufacturers (OEMs). In the
domestic market, some of the key orders include charging gateway solution and
call barring mediation for BSNL, an HR portal for Hutch, mediation solution for
Spice, and network inventory solution for Bharti. In APAC and the Mid-East,
Wipro concentrated on application development and maintenance, 3G applications
testing, data warehousing, MPLS provisioning, and CRM for various service
providers. In Europe and North American markets the company bagged key orders in
the domain of IP Broadband services.
Wipro is fuelling the momentum in the IP domain, WiMax,
convergence, and seamless mobility. It is keenly tracking the trend towards
Linux based Micro-ATCA platforms, FMC, IMS and engendered services, and
developing applications in mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) context, and
seamless mobility in the carrier space.
