VOICE&DATA estimates that TCS' revenue from its telecom business to be
around Rs 1,213 crore in FY 2003—04. In 2002—03, its revenues from its
telecom business was around Rs 900 crore. That is around 35 percent growth. TCS,
India's number one software exporter and one of the top 10 software and IT
services companies of the world, has a significant telecom business from clients
in both the service provider and telecom equipment vendors segments.
TCS' offerings span the entire gamut of the telecom spectrum, with
proprietary tools and methodologies, coupled with onsite and offshore delivery
mechanisms that provide complete solutions. The telecom industry practice is the
second-largest vertical practice of TCS, contributing 20 percent of total
revenues. With a dedicated pool of more than 4,000 professionals, and an
accumulated experience of 20,000 person years, and ongoing associations with
global telecom service providers and equipment manufacturers, TCS has acquired
unparalleled understanding of the telecom domain.

TCS has been successfully providing quality services to several of the world's
largest telecom companies including both the service provider and the telecom
equipment manufacturer segment. Among service providers, its clients include
America Online, British Telecom, FarEasTone (Taiwan) NCIC (Taiwan), NTT (Japan)
OmanTel (Oman), Optus (Australia), Qwest (USA), SBC (USA), SingTel, South West
Bell, Swisscom, TeleDenmark, Telekom Malaysia and Telstra among others. Among
its leading equipment vendor clients are Ericsson, Fujitsu, Hewlett Packard,
Lucent, Motorola, NEC, Nokia and Nortel.
In its endeavor to provide cutting edge services, TCS is constantly investing
heavily in research centers. TCS is designing its own VLSI chipsets based on the
standards. VLSI chipsets are famous for their small size, low power consumption,
and short design turnaround times.
With a number of new facilities across the globe to cater to its customers
spread across geographies, a new office in Amsterdam has allowed TCS to
consolidate its operations across Benelux, focus on its European operations, and
continue to service its client base across Europe. It also started its operation
in Uruguay for the support of CMM or the Capable Mature Model.
TCS recently inaugurated its largest global development center (GDC) at
Hyderabad. With investments up to Rs 150 crore, the 2200-seater GDC will be a
center of excellence for domains like telecom, government (both central and
state), and shipping and ports, and deploy leading edge technologies including
.Net, Opensource, billing, e-governance, and bio-informatics.
In another initiative to build upon their mobile strategy, TCS joined the
Symbian Platinum program to support the growing market for smart phones based on
Symbian OS. Through this partnership TCS will extend its mobile computing-based
services, solutions and offerings to the Symbian OS ecosystem. Symbian OS
licensees account for over 85 percent of worldwide mobile phone sales and in
2003, more than 6.67 million phones based on Symbian OS were shipped worldwide.
This association will enable them to offer leading edge services to mobile
service providers and device manufacturers and further expand their telecom
sector offering and strengthen relationships with enterprise end-users,
application developers, smart phone manufacturers and network operators. TCS'
offerings include Symbian OS embedded software development, consulting, systems
integration, re-engineering and testing services for a number of customer
segments.
