The Sixth V&D 100 Survey analyzed 18 segments, which fall under purview
of communications. A preview as to how these segments performed during the last
fiscal.

Infrastructure

It was the year of infrastructure for Top Groups in telecom–BPL, Bharti,
and Reliance. They were fast preparing for old plans.

Cellular Services

A tremendous growth of 80 percent helped cellular industry to be valued at Rs
2,252 crore (V&D 100 Estimate). Bharti Cellular was the #1 player in the
services sector with a revenue of Rs 210 crore.

Paging

Total paging services market is estimated at Rs 200 crore. DSS Mobile was #1
both in terms of subscribers and turnover. On the pager front, SM Telesys was #1
with more than 50 percent share.

Basic Services

Still at a nascent stage, the basic services, picks up in India. Hughes
Tele.com was the #1 service provider in while Bharti Telenet was # in subscriber
base.

Internet Services

With 72 ISPs operational, India has 9,60,000 subscribers as on 31st March
2000, showing an impressive growth of 297 percent. VSNL was the #1 ISP with a
subscriber base of 3,43,000.

Networking Products

A growth percent of 233 percent helped it touch Rs 1,790 crore. Cisco Systems
retained its numero uno position for the third consecutive year.

Network Integrators

This market was estimated at Rs 1,020 crore and has been growing at 85
percent. Wipro Infotech was the #1 integrator followed by Datacraft RPG.

Call Centres

While 25 call centres having been established, only some of them have gone
live. Indian entrepreneurs are well placed to exploit this opportunity.

VSAT

The total number of VSATs installed were 4,127 taking the cumulative count to
12,617. The total market in India was estimated at Rs 316.8 crore. HECL was the
#1 in the VSAT services and HNS was the #1 VSAT equipment provider.

EPABX

The industry grew around expected lines and was valued at Rs 310 crore,
growing by 19.23 percent. About seven lakh lines were sold and 50 percent was
dominated by low end EPABX.

Computer Telephony

Indian computer telephony industry was in the initial stages. It can be
divided into two divisions–Voice Processing/Fax-On-Demand (FOD) and call
centres. The voice mail and IVR market is estimated at Rs 68 crore.

Telecom Cables

The total telecom cables market was estimated at Rs 4,000 crore, with a
growth of 27 percent. Sterlite was the #1 player with a turnover of Rs 920 crore.

Test & Measurement

The total T&M industry across services and product categories is about Rs
250 crore, an increase of 18 percent in comparison to 1998-99.

Radio Trunking

Unfavourable Government policies led to the closure of many PMRTS operators
resulting in a negative growth of 9 percent for handsets. The total radio
trunking market is estimated at Rs 29.75 crore.

Feature Phones

This market in India was estimated to be around Rs 55-60 crore.

PCO

There are an estimated 120 companies manufacturing PCO instruments in India.
The total PCOs installed till January end this year were 6,13,071.

Telecom Training

The telecom training in India remains restricted to product specific
training. There are very few training institutes offering complete training on
telecom. However business opportunities abound.

Telecom Software

Almost 90 percent of the telecom software sales were exports. An estimated 65
percent of that is estimated to be system software.
