SM Agarwal is among the leading personalities who brought about
a significant change during 1950-90, a period that saw a gradual transition from
the older technology to the modern technology, in India. He was Director General
of Posts and Telegraphs till 1977. He was awarded 'Padmashree' for his
unique contribution to the development of Hindi Teleprinter. Shri Agarwal was
responsible for introduction of modern electronic switching systems besides
large-scale development of long distance transmission network which included
Co-axial and Microwave. In 2000, Agarwal was awarded and honored for his unique
contributions by then Minister of State for Communications, Tapan Sikdar.
Presently he is an advisor to Hindustan Times.
