Simon Beresford Wylie is credited with successfully launching
India's first cellular services in Calcutta. At that time he was the CEO of
Modi Telstra, a joint venture between Australia's Telstra Corporation and
Modicorp. He held this position from 1995-1998.
He was also a key Nokia executive who was bullish about India's
manufacturing capability and was instrumental in selection of India for this. It
was he who announced the setting up of high-end base station manufacturing unit
in Chennai. He also announced the plans to set up network operations in India.
