SWOT

STRENGTH
  • EWSD switches are well-known and widely deployed

WEAKNESS

  • Comparatively low-key in the transmission market

OPPORTUNITY

  • Deployments of private basic operations, cellular network
    expansions/ugradations and broadband networks

THREAT

  • An open field comprising both traditional telecom equipment suppliers and new IP-based product vendors

Seimens Public Communications Ltd (SPCL), unit of the Siemens group of
companies, has repeatedly achieved success in the business of supplying
telecommunications equipment to India’s biggest telecommunications service
providers like BSNL and MTNL.

Growing at a rate of 37.03 percent during FY 2000-01, the 70-30 percent JV
between Siemens AG, Germany, and Siemens Ltd, SPCNL registered a turnover of Rs
696.71 crore. Profits after tax stood at Rs 36.38 crore. The growth was driven
by some big orders for telecom switches from both wireline and wireless service
providers. Significant orders bagged include BSNL for 4-lakh lines and MTNL for
1.9-lakh lines. Siemens claims 29 percent of market share in the switching
segment. For cellular infrastructure, SPCNL has made a name for itself in
provisioning Intelligent Network solutions. It already has implemented one for
BPL Cellular. The company has already done its homework for the expected CDMA
deployments, its 3G TDS CDMA products are expected to go commercial towards the
end of the current year. On the transmission side too, SPCNL has recently bagged
an order for providing STM 16 terminals to BSNL.
