I had the privilege of sitting down with Rahul Patel, the driving force behind Qualcomm's Connectivity, Broadband & Networking Business Unit, to discuss the future of Wi-Fi, its significance in India and globally, and the game-changing potential of Wi-Fi 7 technology.

The Wi-Fi Revolution: From Complexity to Necessity

Rahul Patel began our conversation by highlighting a common challenge faced by consumers globally—complexity in setting up and managing Wi-Fi networks. The fear of technical intricacies, the need to call service providers for assistance, and the reliance on individuals with networking expertise have been persistent hurdles. Patel astutely observed that this challenge is not unique to India but resonates worldwide.

Despite these complexities, Wi-Fi's importance continues to grow, particularly in India. As entertainment preferences shift towards mobile screens and streaming platforms, the demand for Wi-Fi access surges. India boasts one of the world's highest rates of data consumption, driven by the younger generation's affinity for content sharing, social media, and immersive experiences. Rahul Patel emphasizes that this trend is unlikely to wane, given aggressive competition among service providers and subsidies offered to consumers.

However, India's unique housing landscape poses an additional challenge. Homes in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Bangalore are transforming from single-family residences to vertical buildings. This architectural shift, combined with varying home setups, leads to macro congestion, limiting Wi-Fi reach and performance.

Despite these complexities, Patel emphasized that consumers should not be burdened with understanding the intricacies of Wi-Fi technology. Instead, he believes that consumers should enjoy Wi-Fi's benefits seamlessly. To achieve this, he emphasized the need to transition to Wi-Fi 7, citing its potential to enhance spectrum efficiency and reduce congestion.

Wi-Fi 7: A Game Changer

Wi-Fi 7 can enable massive throughput gains by virtue of the wider channel and capacity in the 6 GHz spectrum. The peak rates are as high as 40 Gbps, a fourfold increase over Wi-Fi 6E. With its extreme speeds and consistently low latency, Wi-Fi 7 can elevate wireless experiences and easily support use cases such as extended reality (XR), social cloud-based gaming, 8K video streaming, and simultaneous video conferencing and casting. Wi-Fi 7 pushes the known boundaries of what Wi-Fi can do, on the strength of its hugely impressive features such as 320 MHz channels, 4K QAM technique, and High Band Simultaneous Multi-Link technology.

4K QAM is an advanced modulation scheme that boosts the peak rates to increase the throughput and capacity of Wi-Fi 7 as compared to the previous Wi-Fi versions which employed 1K QAM modulation. The multi-link options that Wi-Fi 7 offers, too, contribute to increasing throughput and reducing latency. The most powerful multi-link option is High-Band Simultaneous Multi-Link, which uses two Wi-Fi radios operating simultaneously in the high bands (5 GHz + 5GHz or 6 GHz) to create one aggregated data pipe capable of delivering great performance, even in densely populated areas such as workspaces, industrial premises, and gaming arenas. This feature provides significantly better performance and throughput even without 6GHz spectrum availability.

The gaming industry in India is experiencing exponential growth. Patel affirmed that Wi-Fi 7 would greatly benefit gamers by offering untethered, immersive gaming experiences. Gamers can enjoy fast, low-latency connections without the limitations of wired connections, ushering in a new era of gaming in India.
