Scientific-Atlanta
was #2 among VSAT vendors in India. The company is now part of Viasat with which
it merged sometime back. While this might not effect the functioning of the
company here as Viasat has hardly any presence in India, the merger will help
the company leverage on Viasat strengths in Defence and DAMA projects. It will
support them with Scientific-Atlanta’s own strength in the broadcasting arena.

On the business front, the past fiscal was again a good year
for the company. Even as the revenue shot up by 42 percent, it supplied 740
VSATs in 1999-00 of which DAMA and TDM/TDMA contributed 370 each. Captive
network was high on its agenda. It netted a turnover of Rs 54 crore as against
Rs 38 crore in the previous year. Among the clients were ONGC (30 DAMA VSAT
network) and the Indian Army (50 VSAT network).
Scientific-Atlanta in its new avatar as Viasat will take some time before it
again settles down to business in its usual way. With Ku-band transponders to be
allotted soon to VSAT service providers, they are expected to make fresh
investment. Moreover, ISPs too are planning Internet gateways. These two factors
are expected to drive Viasat’s growth in India. It has been two months now and
nobody has taken over as the India chief of Viasat, thus affecting performance
in this fiscal.
