In the FY 2001-02, Lucent India was unable to repeat the previous growth rate

and posted a negative growth rate of around 11 percent, with a turnover of Rs

750 crore.

Lucent crossed 2 million lines of installed base of switches in the country,

during the fiscal 2001-02. The company is very strong in the government sector

and has bagged switching orders from BSNL worth Rs 190 crore, BSNL rural (WLL)

order for fixed wireless terminal and infrastructure worth Rs 150 crore, and GSM

order from MTNL worth Rs 60 crore.

On the private operators front too, the company has done pretty well and has

bagged good orders from Hughes Tele.com and Tata Teleservices. For Hughes

Tele.com, the company sold broadband products for ADSL and ISP operations worth

Rs 100 crore and in Tata Teleservices, Lucent invested Rs 100 crore. Some of the

orders bagged during the period include 0.5 million switches from BSNL and

turnkey project for BSNL’s GSM project for western states of Maharashtra,

Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh.

On the ISP front, Lucent was unable to perform well. The company was unable

to close any major deal in the RAS/router segment, as the ISPs did not perform

well. The company was also not successful on the transport front.
