Telstra, which was one of the first cellular operators to start its services in
the country, was also the first cellular operator to set up operations in
Calcutta. The company is a 51:49 JV between ModiSoft (ModiCorp, Distacom of Hong
Kong and AIG Infrastructure Fund of the US) and Australian telecom giant Telstra.
Telstra, however, is withdrawing from the JV and its stake will be brought by
ModiCorp.

This cellular service provider is presently concentrating on
strengthening its base by introducing new services for its subscribers. As in
March 2000, the company is estimated to have a subscriber base of 48,478.
The company’s total equity investment in the business has
been Rs 133 crore. There are plans to increase the investment by Rs 67 crore. An
additional investment of Rs 40 crore was announced in April this year. This will
be in the form of term loan that will be utilized to set up 35 additional base
stations, expansion of switch capacity and introduction of WAP technology. There
are plans to provide SMS service to customers.
Modi Telstra has joined hands with Satyam Infoway to use its infrastructure
backbone to provide Internet access to its subscribers. As an extension of this,
it has recently tied-up with Allindia.com to provide two new facilities–"Dial-n-mail"
and "e-mail to voice-mail".
