New Update

Samsung Electronics India In formation and Telecommunications (SEIIT) did a
business of Rs 110.6 crore through the sale of mobile handsets and fax machines
in fiscal 2001-02, as against Rs 105 crore in the previous fiscal. Handset sales
accounted for Rs 94 crore. Out of this, sales of GSM phones accounted for Rs 66
crore, while those of CDMA phones yielded Rs 28 crore. The lure of gray market
for users was the main reason behind Samsung’s slow handset growth. Samsung
benefited in the CDMA space due to the rollout of WLL-M services by several
basic operators. The telecom business formed about 10 percent of Samsung’s
overall business. SEIIT was formed in May 2000, as a wholly-owned subsidiary of
Samsung for IT/telecom products. The Korean major also announced its plan to
invest about $6 million in India by December 2002. It also plans to expand its
handset business through marketing and service initiatives.

color LCD display–T100–priced at Rs 32,000. It plans to set up about seven
mobile phone plazas called ‘Samsung Talkies’ across the country. Samsung has
tied up with operators like HFCL Infotel, Tata Teleservices and Shyam Telelink
