It was a bad year for Hughes Net work Systems (HNS) as the company was unable
to continue with the number one position and slipped to the number two position
in all the categories, be it the overall VSAT equipment vendor, TDMA, or DAMA.
This slip in position was because the company was unable to bag any major
deal except Playwin Lottery. The revenue figures almost remained stagnant for
the VSAT segment at Rs 83 crore due to the flat growth of the company. But, on
the number front, HNS increased its VSAT tally to 3,047, an increase of 73
percent. The increase in numbers was mainly contributed by the large order from
Playwin Lottery, where plans are for commissioning 3,500 VSATs. The introduction
of broadway terminals called DirecWay, in the range of around Rs 1.25 lakh, was
another factor.
In terms of overall turnover, the company netted Rs 119.5 crore, with a
growth of 44.7 percent, mainly because of a good growth in the LMDS segment.

With the launch of DirecWay terminals in India, the company is targeting the
SME and home segments, and dealer distribution network of enterprises. Lifting
up of the 64 kbps band, and the introduction of broadband terminals, have made
HNS focus on the distance education market where one can see a lot of demand for
DirecWay terminals.
