Now
part of HCL Technologies, HCL Comnet continues to be a strong player in the
Indian VSAT and networking segments. However, towards the end of the last fiscal
its focus seemed to have moved more towards providing Internet-based e-services.

While its network integration and VSAT services team
specializes in providing e-business infrastructures, HCL Comnet itself is
becoming a "A" Category ISP. Both as a VSAT service provider as well
as an ISP, it would like to be seen as the broadband Internet/bandwidth service
provider for the corporates.
On the other hand, it is in the process of setting up
international gateways based on satellite earth stations. It may also be eagerly
waiting to spring into action as a national VSAT-based ISP once VSATs are
allowed for use in setting up an Internet backbone.
An indicator of HCL Comnet’s effort to shift from being a networking
products/VSAT driven company into an e-services company can be noticed in its
financial performance. It ended last fiscal with a turnover of Rs 65 crore from
VSAT services, network integration, and security services. Compared to Rs 65.7
crore revenue that it did from network integration (VSAT included) in fiscal
1998-99, this fiscal was literally a stagnant year, in which the company was
busy refocusing, regrouping to become part of HCL Technologies, and busy
preparing for its IPO.
