For
this cellular services provider of Andhra Pradesh, it was a year of
consolidation. While on operational front it increased its subscriber base to
60,000, on the corporate front it signed an important MoU with Birla AT&T.
As per the agreement, the principal shareholders of Tata Communications and
Birla AT&T would merge the cellular properties owned by both companies. The
MoU was to set up a JV for providing cellular services in Maharashtra (excluding
Mumbai), Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, and Goa.

The company is estimated to have done a turnover of Rs 85
crore last year. It came up with aggressive price plans and products like
freedom card, CUG, and a recognition programme like Club Cellect. Its STD
services like TCD and TCDP got popular during the year. It rolled out services
to almost one new area per fortnight. It has the longest continuous cellular
corridor along the coastal and commercial towns in the state. New cell sites
were installed in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam. DoT interconnection (POL) was
implemented in Kakinada.
Last year, it also introduced international auto-roaming facility. It is also
the first operator to provide WAP services. And to strengthen its customer care
service, it introduced IVRs and also started customer-focused meetings. It has
been able to garner over 56 percent market share, and get average monthly tariff
of over Rs 1,100 per subscriber.
