Nokia continued its leadership position in the Indian mobile phones market,
cornering around 40 percent of the legal market for handsets in the country. It
is estimated that the company raked in around Rs 103 crore from its mobile
handsets business. The company is estimated to have done a business worth Rs 100
crore in the mobile infrastructure space.
While on one hand, Nokia introduced ten new models for diverse customer
segments during FY 2001-02, on the other hand it kept on building a countrywide
sales and support infrastructure to satiate the growing needs of the Indian
mobile phone users. By the end of the fiscal, it set up five Nokia Professional
Centers located in an equal number of cities and 72 Nokia Priority Dealers in 27
cities. In addition, the company also had 63 Nokia Care Centers. It also set up
a national helpline number covering around 25 cities. It also initiated a number
of branding and advertising campaigns to encourage SMS usage.

It appears that Nokia did not bag any major deal in the mobile infrastructure
space except for the one from Idea Cellular for its yet-to-launch operations in
Delhi. Nokia supplied the complete system to Idea, including the GSM and GPRS
core network, radio-access network, Intelligent Network, Mobile Internet systems
and value-added services. Nokia will also provide implementation and technical
support services to Idea.
