A
significant development for JT Mobile (JTM) was its acquisition by Bharti. Its
services have been relaunched under "AirTel" brand. The revenues from
services was estimated at Rs 120 crore. The subscriber base was 46,400 and
47,950 in AP and Karnataka, respectively.
The new management announced the upgradation of its switching
centre to a capacity of 1,50,000 subscribers. It has till date invested Rs 400
crore in the acquisition of a majority stake in JT Mobile. It has invested
another Rs 200 crore for upgradation of existing switches and addition of fresh
capacities, laying of optic fibre backbone, and for value-added services.

By May, AirTel was to commence its operations in
Hubli-Dharwad, Shimoga, Belgaum, Davanagere, Gulbarga, Udupi, and Manipal in
Karnataka. It also launched value-added services, like SMS facility. In AP, it
plans to invest around Rs 200 crore covering 25 cities.
It inaugurated a new Ericsson exchange with total installed
capacity of 1,50,000 and has plans to cover 150 sites by September.
Bharti is laying 5,000-km optic fibre network to cover the
above two states in two phases. It has awarded this project to Siemens Public
Communication Networks and Systems Ltd (SPCNL).
After the acquisition, AirTel has 74 percent stake and remaining 26 percent
is with Telia.
