Qualcomm 3G tablets for 400 students

US-based chipmaker Qualcomm Inc has tied up with Sesame Workshop India and the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) to offer 3G tablets to nearly 400 children in south Delhi's primary schools.

“Qualcomm is funding the 3G tablets to enable children in the low-strata of society to access mobile technologies for educational and infotainment content in Hindi language,” Qualcomm said in a statement.

The chipset maker has provided Micromax Funbook 3G P600 tablets to the school children.

"We are exploring ways to transform education with technology intervention. Qualcomm Wireless Reach initiative is funding this program," said Qualcomm India country manager and vice president (South Asia) Sandeep Sibal at a workshop jointly organized by the company, the corporation and NGO Sesame Workshop India.

“Smartphones are becoming the first means to access Internet and mobile broadband is set to transform all facets of life that include education, health, banking and entertainment. The current initiative helps improve learning methodology,” Sibal said.

Under its Wireless Reach initiative around education, environment, entrepreneurship, healthcare and public safety in more than 35 countries, including seven in India, Qualcomm is running close to 100 programs.
