Nokia launches Asha 501 in India, priced at $99

Nokia today unveiled Asha 501, a new family of Asha smartphones in India.

The phone was launched by Nokia chief Stephen Elop in New Delhi.

Commenting on the launch of Asha 501 Stephen Elop said, "We have created this new platform based on our acquisition of Norway based Smarterphone AS in 2012. This has incredible performance, faster response in terms of user experience, and more affordable Internet experience."

The handset pushes the boundaries of affordable smartphone design with bold calour, a high quality build and an innovative user interface and would be available in six clours.

Asha 501 comes with nokia Xpress Browser pre-loaded which helps in making mobile browsing faster and more affordable.

The company has also announced the availability of Nokia Xpress Now, a new web application that recommends content based on location, preferences and trending topics.

In terms of usage, Nokia 501 provides a talktime of 17 hours and 48 days of standby time.

The new platform provide developers with an open, standards based environment for creating quality apps for consumers. Developers can create apps for the Nokia Asha 501 that will be compatible with future Asha paltform-based devices. Nokia gives developers the chance to make more money through the global reach of Nokia Store and tools like Nokia In-App payment and Nokia Advertising Exchange (NAX), as wel as Nokia's unparrelleled operator billing network.

The phones is expected to start shipping in June, 2013 and will be priced at $99. It is expected to be available through approximately 60 operators and distributors in more than 90 countries. For India, the company has tied up with Airtel and MTS
