The new broadband policy of the department of telecommunications is likely to be announced next week. Dayanidhi Maran, minister of communications and IT announced this on occasion of the launching of the digital certifying authority of the Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) known as the MTNL Trust Line.

Maran said that with the launch of the certifying authority services, the MTNL has become the first telecom operator in the country to enter the sector. The launch of this service, along with provisioning of telecom services by a single entity will not only help MTNL as an operator but also customers at large.

He added that MTNL's extensive distribution network will help in reaching wide spectrum of society. Its customers may find it convenient to request for various services like shifting of phones, installation of STD/ISD facilities without visiting its offices as these requests can henceforth be sent under digital signatures, which will not require physical verification.
