Motorola ex-CEO Robert Galvin passes away

Robert Galvin, the former Motorola chairman and CEO, has passed away on October 11 at the age of 89. Galvin was the son of Paul Galvin, founder of Motorola –then called Galvin Manufacturing. Robert Galvin served Motorola as CEO for 29 years -from 1956 to 1989. He was instrumental in helping it develop into a successful global company with US$10.8 billion of sales by the time he stepped down as chairman in 1990.

Galvin was in charge of the company when it introduced the first portable cellphone prototype, the DynaTAC, in the 1980s.
He was also was instrumental, along with Motorola engineer Bill Smith, in implementing the Six Sigma quality system at Motorola.
“Today, we lost a transformative leader and visionary”, current Motorola Mobility chairman and CEO, Sanjay Jha, said.
