Molex India Ltd (MIL), the wholly owned subsidiary of Molex, is one of the
largest manufacturers of electronic components, has played an important role in
the Indian connector and premise cabling markets. The main markets for MIL are
consumer electronics, where it is the market leader by far, and telephone
switches and instruments. The company’s estimated turnover in 2000-01 was Rs
65 crore in the telecom and cabling business put together. While the telecom
oriented business is estimated to be Rs 49 crore, the structured cabling
business is about Rs 16 crore. The main reason for success of the company has
been its manufacturing facility in Bangalore which caters to the supply of
components to Indian and SAARC region. Recently it expanded to a third facility
for manufacturing.
In the structured cabling market in India, the company is slowly
consolidating its market position. In the last fiscal, it is estimated to have
done a total business of Rs 16 crore and accounts for 10.5 percent market share.
It is the fourth largest company in this business. Molex smartly positioned
itself to address the 250-500 node network and small cities on account of which
it achieved its breakthrough. And as a strategy, it continued with the training
and appointed two distributors, SES Tech and Aditi. Now, with the fiber market
and the telecom market opening up in India and Asia, Molex is on its way to
consolidating its business further.
