The largest telecom in India, Reliance Jio, will probably soon make its FWA (fixed wireless access) device available for the Indian market. The telco has been deploying 5G quickly, and until it has a total coverage of India, it makes no sense to monetize 5G. But Jio can at least provide FWA service in the areas or circles that have had extensive 5G coverage. Jio's rival Bharti Airtel has already begun providing 5G FWA service in two circles.

On August 28, 2023, Reliance Industries, the parent company of Reliance Jio, is scheduled to hold its annual general meeting (AGM). During the AGM, the firm frequently makes significant Jio-related announcements. This time, the business is very likely to reveal the 5G FWA service for customers. Keep in mind that Jio previously released the product to the market and displayed it during the 2023 India Mobile Congress.

Earlier this month, Jio's biggest competion, telecommunications service provider Bharti Airtel, announced the launch of Airtel Xstream AirFiber, its fixed wireless access (FWA) offering, on 5G for consumers in Delhi and Mumbai.  Airtel Xstream AirFiber service is available at an affordable Rs 799 plan, which offers up to 100Mbps speed. The plan can be availed for a duration of six months with a one-time refundable security deposit of Rs.2500.

Customers can only use Bharti Airtel's 5G FWA service for six months. This entails a one-time payment, which not everyone may find convenient. Because the cost of CPE (Consumer Premise Equipment) is too high to support providing FWA service at a low cost, Airtel has chosen this course of action. In order to prevent losses for the business from providing the service in the first place, it is best to require the consumer to pay in one lump payment.

The direction Reliance Jio takes will be interesting to watch. The telco will probably begin providing 5G FWA service before the end of this year after it has achieved nationwide 5G coverage. For many clients in areas without fibre internet connectivity, 5G FWA service can be quite helpful.
