Minister of state for Telecommunications, Devusinh Chauhan, informed that the government plans to deploy indigenous created 5G technology by August. On Wednesday, he made the statements while speaking at the World Summit on the Information Society(WSIS) 2022. The event was hosted by the United Nations' International Telecommunication Union(ITU).
According to Chauhan, the government would also establish a research and development fund to support the advancement of telecom technologies. In a statement released on Thursday, he stated: "India has developed its own 4G stack, with 4G Core and Radio Access Networks being constructed and tested in the country. It enables operators to select any vendor, cuts costs, and facilitates expansion. By August 2022, an indigenous 5G stack is also planned to be deployed."
TCS and C-DoT, a state-owned telecom research agency, are working together to create 5G technology that will likely be deployed on the BSNL network. According to the minister, India adheres to the philosophy of Antyodaya which refers to the development of those at the bottom of the pyramid, those who are marginalized, live in remote locations, and are cut off from the main stream.
"Optical fibre cables are being used to connect 600,000 settlements in order to establish a stable ICT infrastructure. Small and distant islands, as well as other inaccessible places, are being connected by satellite communication services and undersea cable networks." he added.
On the margins of the event, Chauhan met with Japan's Vice Minister for Policy Coordination, Yuji Sasaki, and discussed joint collaboration in a number of sectors, including 5G and network security, according to an official release. Iran's Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Issa Zarepour also met with Chauhan for bilateral meeting.
