Tata Indicom has announced the launch of 'Tata Indicom Mobile Internet Radio',
a live streaming world radio-casts in English, Hindi, Telegu, Tamil, and English
and international languages with MP3 quality sound. Called Cell Radio Links, the
BREW application from the US-based Locate-It Info, offers a bouquet of services.
Tata Indicom has teamed with 41 globally renowned International and local radio
stations. The services is initially available on Motorazr V3C, Samsung Wideo,
and Motorola World Phone with a subscription charge of Rs 25 for 15 days across
all Tata Indicom's circles, even in those markets where FM services haven't
commenced. Eventually the services would be made available even on low-end BREW
enabled handsets.
Tata Indicom is the first to provide the service, but Internet
radio holds a lot of potential and can have revolutionary implications on the
industry. The service offers international music, news and sports, Indian radio
stations, Bloomberg, BBC, CNN, Fox Radio, ESPN Radio, and Seattle WM. Although
the ability to listen to radio on the cell phone is not new, service provides
access to news on radio and a wider choice of channels. Till now radio on mobile
was restricted to the cities where FM services were available. But, this service
expands the service to almost entire nation. If Indicom does the pricing right
and brings in the right kind of content, it can be an ace in the hands of the
company till the competition catches on.
