Indian Railways would soon begin deploying a GSM (R) -based network in order
to augment its operational efficiency. To begin with, the government has
sanctioned the deployment of the network for 2400 Kilometres. In fact, the
deployment work has already begun in the Eastern and the North East Frontier
Railway Zones. Initially, the railways plan to deploy the network along two
types of routes — one the busy ones and the other running through disturbed
areas like Jammu and the North East.
GSM (R) is a new standard for wireless rail telecommunications endorsed and
sponsored by the International Union of Railways.
Since the system focuses on safety, reliability, prevention of accidents and
the general well being of the travelling public, the system would be handy for
communication between the train driver, station master and the railway guard
especially during times of emergency.
