India to introduce 6G by 2029 claims telecom minister

While 6G development has already begun globally, 5G has only recently begun to become a more widely used technology. 5G debuted in India only 6 months ago and India is already considering 6G. According to Union Telecommunications minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, India would likely introduce its 6G network by 2029.

According to a report by Deccan Herald, In his remarks at a PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry event, Vaishnaw remarked, “We are laying the foundation for the future. 6G will come around 2029-30, the target was to cover 200 cities by December 2023, but 5G services have already been launched in 397 cities. “Nobody in the world has seen such a rapid rollout of 5G." He stressed that India's 5G rollout is already the quickest in the world.

While discussing 6G, the telecom minister stated that the Prime Minister has set a clear objective for India to dominate 6G. According to him, India is already on track to surpass the United States as the 5G consumer powerhouse. New smartphones and tablets that are 5G-enabled are already being pushed into the ecosystem.

Vaishnaw also revealed that India has become an exporter of telecom equipment. In accordance with the minister, India started export of radio equipment, used in telecom towers, to the United States around five months back.

By the end of next 1 to 2 years Indian telecom providers including Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel want to have fully deployed 5G over the entire nation. By the end of 2023, Jio has promised to cover the entire nation, while Airtel has promised to achieve similar goals by the end of March 2024.

Over 400 Indian villages and cities have already been reached. As Airtel and Jio fight to roll out 5G in more areas of the country, the number is only expected to continue ising rapidly in the near future.
