Huawei to Set Up Manufacturing in India

Huawei Technologies is planning to set up a manufacturing unit in India. The company has identified two locations-Gurgaon or Bangalore-for the proposed facility. It would manufacture handsets and 3G equipment at its India facility. Huawei is also planning to introduce its GSM and CDMA handsets in India by this year's end. It is also planning to set up training centers for its customers as well as a customer care center, which would be set up along with its manufacturing facility.

The company has earmarked an investment of $100 million in its India operations. This amount would also be used up in setting up it own R&D facility in Bangalore. Currently, the company operates from a leased facility in Bangalore and employes 800 people. This 28-acre, 3,000-seater facility is expected to commence operations by end of 2005. The company plans to up its R&D headcount in India to 2000 by this year-end.

Huawei is a private high-tech enterprise, which specializes in R&D, production and marketing of communications equipment and providing customized network solutions for telecom carriers in different areas.
