Chinese telecom gear maker Huawei Technologies has shown interest in investing in Gujarat and has invited Chief Minister Narendra Modi to visit its research and development center in Shenzen, China.
The company is planning to set up a comprehensive manufacturing facility in the state and would focus on products like mobile devices and infrastructure equipments. At, present, the company is manufacturing optical equipments with an outsourcing model with Flextronics.
The Chief Minister is on a five-day visit to China on the invitation of Chinese Government.He will be accompanied by about 20 industrialists and businessmen from different sectors. The way Gujarat has emerged as the growth engine of India’s fast developing economy in Asia, the invitation should open up new horizons of mutual relations in economic, infrastructural and industrial development between Gujarat and China.
Under a comprehensive five year plan envisaged in December last year, Huawei had announced to invest $2 billion in the Indian market. The investment will focus on the development, augmentation and cooperation in the areas of local R&D, local manufacturing, technology cooperation with Indian IT service companies, local sourcing, local employment, talent development, and supporting rural education and IT literacy in India.
The multi-dimensional plan will also support local industrial and social-economic development in ICT infrastructure capacities and bridging digital divide, as part of Huawei's key initiatives to further cooperate with India.
The two governments are scheduled to explore the possibility of building mutual relations during the visit in different fields like manufacturing, automobile engineering, port development, information and communication technology. The business delegation from Gujarat would also explore similar possibility in the private sector over a series of meetings with their Chinese counterparts.
Huawei India currently has operations in 19 major regions and employs over 6000 technical and professional staff across the country. On the R&D front, Huawei has the biggest R&D center outside China in Bangalore since 1999 that employs 2,000 engineers currently. Recently, it opened another R&D center in Bangalore with a capacity of another 1,000 staff.
