Govt sets SAR norms for mobile phones

The goverment of India has fixed specific absorption rate (SAR) value for handsets as 1.6 and has said that mobile handsets manufactured and sold in India, or imported from the other countries shall be checked for compliance of SAR limit.

The goverment has announced certain norms according to which the SAR level for mobile handsets should not exceed 1.6 Watt/Kg, averaged over a 6 minutes period and taken over a volume containing a mass of 1 gram of human tissue.The SAR level should be displayed on the handset, and all cell phones being sold in the market should comply with BIS standards.

The goverment is seeking consultation regarding the implementation of these norms, and has also mentioned that the manufacturers in India will have to provide self declaration of SAR value of the handset.

The inclusion of safety precautions like- ensuring that the cell phone has a low SAR, keeping the calls short and using the phone only when the signal quality is good, in the cellphone's booklet too has been included in SAR norms of the goverment.

The goverment has said that the list of SAR values of different mobile phones shall be uploaded on the website of Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and Telecommunication Engineering Centres (TEC).
