From gaming to 5G, MediaTek positions high-performance chipsets for 2020

It has always been Snapdragon when it comes to processors. But, over the years MediaTek took prominence to change this purview as the chipset maker ensured that avid gamers who chose smartphones based on the processors needed an affordable option. Meeting specific needs for the gaming and for the 5G market, MediaTek has positioned its smartphone processors such that it suits an array of budget-conscious smartphone buyers. This year MediaTek will concentrate on bringing chipsets that have enhanced features in terms of configuration and specifications. The company’s futuristic chipsets are designed to leverage Artificial Intelligence, gaming capabilities, and 5G connectivity.

MediaTek powers more than 1.5 billion devices in a year, across mobile and non-mobile categories. MediaTek’s new chipsets to look forward:

1. MediaTek Helio G70 and G80 chipsets

On a global scale, gaming has overtaken films and music as the preferred leisure activity. The largest segment under the industry is smartphone gaming, powered by increased mobile penetration, robust internet connectivity, low data costs and the improvement in the quality of games on offer. According to the Internet and Mobile Association of India, the domestic mobile gaming market is likely to cross USD 400 million by 2022.

Through wide-ranging platform enhancements, MediaTek makes every millisecond matter, ensuring there's no barrier to users dominating the field. MediaTek enables premium features for cameras, connectivity, multimedia, and industry-leading AI performance.

The latest MediaTek Helio G70 and G80 chipsets feature an array of technologies that boost the mobile gaming experience; from vivid visuals and rapid sensing touchscreens to enhancing the connection between the smartphone and the internet. The Redmi Note 8 Pro uses MediaTek Helio G90T chip.

Focusing on ensuring premium experiences for its users, MediaTek’s newly launched Helio P95 features the next generation processing unit APU 2.0, a fusion of MediaTek’s AI architecture that delivers a 10 percent increase in benchmark performance versus the previous generation. MediaTek says that this feature makes Helio P95 one of the most powerful AI processing engines available for 4G smartphones, ensuring premium AI performance and boosted gaming experiences. This enables brands to build premium smartphones that can capture impressive high-resolution photos at up to 64MP and deliver stunning AI-camera actions, depth processing enhancements for portrait pictures and full-body movement tracking for exciting AR apps.

Along with MediaTek HyperEngine gaming technology, the MediaTek Helio P95 also features intelligent speed uplift for rapid gameplay, end-to-end optimization for seamless sense response, AI enhancements for visual perception and noise-reduction (AI-NR) and brilliant picture quality that helps in secure and fast facial recognition for mobile payments and smartphone unlocking.

On March 4^th, OPPO Reno 3 Pro with MediaTek Helio P95 was launched in India. Smartphone market analysts say that this premium P series chip is an AI-powerhouse, pumping performance up an extra 10% in AI benchmarks and gaming compared to its previous generation.

3. MediaTek Dimensity Family of Chipsets

Dimensity is MediaTek’s family of powerful 5G system-on-chips (SoCs) offering a combination of connectivity, multimedia, AI and imaging innovations for premium and flagship smartphones. Dimensity represents a step toward a new era of mobility – the fifth dimension – to spur industry innovation and let consumers unlock the possibilities of 5G connectivity.

MediaTek has designed the chipsets to bring smart and fast together to power the world’s most capable 5G devices. The Dimensity series integrates MediaTek’s 5G modem in one compact design, delivering significant power-saving solutions.

The MediaTek Dimensity 1000 5G SoC supports 5G two carrier aggregation (2CC CA) and boasts the world’s fastest throughput SoC with 4.7Gbps downlink and 2.5Gbps uplink speeds over sub-6GHz networks. The chipset is designed to support stand-alone and non-standalone (SA/NSA) sub-6GHz networks and includes multi-mode support for every cellular connectivity generation from 2G to 5G.

The recently announced MediaTek Dimensity 800 Series 5G chipset family also supports 5G with two carrier aggregation (2CC CA), for 30 percent wider high-speed layer coverage, more seamless 5G handover, and higher average throughput performance compared to other solutions, with single carrier (1CC, no CA). The chipset is designed to support both stand-alone and non-standalone sub-6GHz networks. It includes multi-mode support for every cellular connectivity generation from 2G to 5G and also supports Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS).

The Dimensity 800 series includes support for services such as Voice over New Radio (VoNR), delivers seamless connectivity across networks, and offers both data and voice on 5G. Additionally, the chipset’s integrated 5G modem delivers extreme energy efficiency and is a more power-efficient design than other solutions in the market.

It is rumored that there is a possibility of the 2020 smartphones that support 5G to be launched by OnePlus/Redmi/Realme/Oppo can come with Dimensity 800 chipset.
