Huawei under Indian Government Radar

Huawei is currently going through an uncertain phase in India. The Government of India had prepared a list of “trusted sources” under the National Security Directive for the supply of telecom network equipment. This can potentially keep Chinese vendors out of India’s 5G deployment. In a similar move, the US and the UK have also taken steps to bar them from critical infrastructure. The Chinese telecommunication giant that provides ICT infrastructure and smart devices, is, thus, in a fix. According to an ET report, Airtel gave a wireline expansion contract worth Rs 300 crore to Huawei for its national long-distance (NLD) network. Huawei, however, has lost significant radio business from Airtel amid the uncertainty.

The company also faces allegations of involvement in snooping on behalf of the Chinese state. The Indian government – amid border tensions with China – has been informally nudging state-run telcos and even private ones to stop sourcing equipment from that country, citing national security. But there has been no official communication barring Chinese vendors so far. Huawei has denied any wrongdoing, ET reported.
