IDC Q1 2004 Disk Storage Tracker report ranks EMC as the second largest storage vendor in external storage market with a 24.7 percent market share in revenue terms. In the process, its revenue grew by 638 percent and its volumes, in gigabyte terms, grew by 1,235 percent on a year-on-year basis.
It has reached the number two position from being the number five player in Q1 2003. And, according to the report, EMC is the only vendor in India to have grown its market share over the last three quarters. Its share in Q1 2003 stood at four percent and became 24.7 percent in Q1 2004.
On a worldwide basis also, EMC had a market share of 20.2 percent, and ranked umber one in external storage, according to IDC's estimates.
Most of this growth in market share was at the expense of storage vendors such as HP, IBM, and Sun Microsystems. Some of the prominent customers that EMC sold storage to in Q1 2004 include Agilent Technologies, Airtel, Hutch/Orange, CDSL, Citibank, Data Access, CDAC, Quark, Reuters, and Wipro Technologies.
