CommWorks is showcasing some of the new class of communications microservices that it is delivering today to service providers around the world. These customized, targeted services promise to change the way business gets done and improve how individuals use voice and data services. "Microservices offer the potential for carriers to generate new revenues and greatly increase customer loyalty," said Todd Landry, vice president, product management, CommWorks. "Right now people don’t see any difference between one carrier and the next." The complexity of introducing new services in the traditional circuit-switched telephone network environment is evident by the sameness of carriers’ offerings today. There is little service differentiation and customer loyalty and retention remains a persistent problem.
But the emergence of softswitch technology in telecommunications networks is making it possible for service providers to introduce microservices, according to Landry. In an all Internet Protocol (IP) network centered on the softswitch, service providers can develop differentiated services, customizable based on communities of common interest. The softswitch also will allow service providers to offer their customers a common look and feel for services regardless of the access media (narrowband, broadband, wireline, or wireless). By providing consistent call control and applications across all devices, the softswitch allows service providers to more readily target vertical markets, enterprises and other groups with micro-services.
