The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) today made a compelling case for allocating mid-band 6GHz spectrum for wireless 5G network services. COAI argued that doing so will have a deep effect on the quality and cost of next-gen services. The mid-band spectrum is essential for the spread of 5G services, according to COAI.

Also due to its excellent propagation characteristics, 6GHz will be perfect for heavily populated jammed areas, especially the urban locations, feels COAI.

SP Kochhar, Director General, COAI said in a media briefing,"Right now, about 720 MHz spectrum that telcos have in the mid band range is not enough for the requirements."

The 6 GHz bands, in COAI's view could offer various advantages but mainly it would speed up and reduce the cost of 5G technology. Also, it would aid in lowering carbon footprints. And COAI suggests it is the sole mid-band spectrum that may be utilized in the coming years to meet the rising demand for telecom services.

It is anticipated that by 2030, the demand for telecom services would have multiplied immensely. That is the moment when mobile networks would be in need of more capacity and 6 GHz prove to be ideal for that.

Indian carriers are now providing mid-band services for 5G with the 3.3 GHz and 3.67 GHz frequency. However, as demand rises, this band's capacity won't be sufficient to meet the rising demand in the upcoming years. Therefore, industry groups are working to have the 6GHz band recognized as being essential for the development of mobile connection services.
