The research firm has said that CIOs must plan for at least three distinct mobile strategies in 2012.One amongst them is an employee-facing strategy, addressing several issues such as collaboration, role-specific applications such as sales force automation, consumerisation and basic connectivity.

''Second generation mobile strategies differ considerably from those of the first generation. They must be multichannel, part of your holistic digital strategy, as well as including innovative mobile-only capabilities. They must include a wide variety of mobile endpoints including mobile to mobile (M2M),'' said Leif-Olof Wallin, research VP at Gartner.

There will also be a tactical consumer-facing strategy which is a 12 month window, and a more strategic consumer-facing strategy dealing with slower-moving and more predictable issues and technologies such as Long Term Evolution, added the firm.
