Chinasat will commence satellite-based broadband service using Ipstar. When launched sometime later this year, the Ipstar satellite would provide broadband access service to millions of users in about 20 countries throughout Asia-Pacific, complementing other terrestrial broadband technologies such as DSL and cable modem. Chinasat has projects that require high-speed data transmission to be deployed quickly nationwide. Chinasat will provide broadband applications and high-speed Internet access for applications such as e-government, corporate Intranet, virtual private networks (VPN), and voice over IP (VoIP). Currently, there are more than 80 million Internet users including eight million broadband users in China, and broadband is still growing at a fast pace.
