State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) on June 18, 2005 said its mobile subscriber base has crossed the 10 million (1 crore) mark.Â
Out of the 10 million connections, 1.6 million are in Eastern Zone, 2.10 million in Western Zone, 2.60 million in Northern Zone, and 3.70. million in Southern Zone, BSNL said in a press release.
The company plans to add 4 million mobile subscribers in each quarter progressively during the current financial year, the release said, adding BSNL would also introduce new technologies on the wireless front to enable broadband services to be available through the wireless media.Â
To a limited extent the data services on the mobile will the available on GPRS, which will get augmented further, by EDGE technology in district headquarters as a part of 15 million lines roll out, it said.
BSNL launched its mobile phone services on 19th October 2002, and has its foot print across the country covering all the district headquarters, most of the important national highways, state highways, important tourist and pilgrimage centers.
