The awards are based on an exhaustive survey of the telecom and networking
industry in India, and use a sales-and-revenue performance model. Around 1,000
companies participated in the survey. The awards have also been declared online.
BSNL, the state-owned telecom giant, has been adjudged the Top Basic Service
Provider of the year 2001. The company clocked a turnover of Rs 23,034 crore in
fiscal 2000-01. Its major achievements for the period under consideration
include deployment of 59.2 lakh lines against a target of 57.9 lakh lines,
deployment of 54,000 rkm on the OFC front and 583 lckm on the JFTC front.
Bharti won the award in the Cellular Service Provider category. This largest
private communications service provider in India registered a gross turnover of
Rs 471.5 crore in the fiscal 2000-01. Its subscriber base grew by an impressive
78 percent to reach 3.28 lakh–the highest in the country. Bharti’s SMS
business grew by more than 100 percent.
Agilent Technologies bagged the Top T&M Vendor award, having netted a
turnover of Rs 105 crore out of a total T&M market of Rs 370 crore.

Cisco Systems was declared the Top Network Vendor of the year 2001. The
company registered a revenue of Rs 765 crore and grew by a remarkable 125
percent, in the fiscal 2000-01. It increased its dominance in the router market,
maintained the lead in the switching segment, and gained both market-share and
mind-share in the IP contact center space.
The Top Network Distributor of Year 2001 honor went to MRO-TEK, the largest
distributor of networking products in the country. The company registered a
turnover of Rs 127 crore. It also became the first networking and access
products company to get listed on Indian bourses.

Wipro Infotech romped home with the Top Network Integrator award. Wipro’s
networking division grew by over 11 percent, and did business worth Rs 270 crore.
In the ISP category, VSNL won the trophy. The company registered a 72 percent
growth in its Internet subscriber base. Its leased data circuits went up from
1,634 to 4,916 during the period.
Hindustan Cables was adjudged the Top Cable Vendor of the year. The company
netted a turnover of Rs 974 crore in the fiscal year 2000-01, being a major
supplier of jelly filled cable to DoT and BSNL.
ITI Ltd emerged as the Top Infrastructure Company. On a turnover of Rs 2,185
crore, the company earned a net profit of Rs 25.23 crore.
Tata Telecom, which maintained its dominance in the high-end EPABX market,
with a market-share of over 40 percent, bagged the Top EPABX Vendor award. It
grew by about 26 percent in fiscal 2000-01.

Hughes Escorts Communications was the winner in the Top VSAT Company
category. HECL not only maintained its supremacy in the market with revenues of
Rs 140 crore, it also registered a growth of 35 percent.
The Top Telecom Software Company award went to Wipro Technologies. In
2000-01, Wipro accounted for as much as 18 percent of Rs 4,034-crore worth of
telecom software exports from India.
Shyam Telecom won the award for the Fastest Growing Company.
