The event showcases demonstrations and the latest achievements towards making 5G a reality, and ways of accelerating the development of new, 5G-powered Internet of Things (IoT) innovations across multiple industries. Co-sponsored by Nokia and the NYU WIRELESS Research Center at the New York University Tandon School of Engineering, the event will be held April 20-22 in Brooklyn, New York and be live streamed by IEEE Communications Society.

The Brooklyn 5G Summit seeks to increase the pace of development in the telecom and non-telecom sectors through the accelerated delivery of 5G technologies for critical industry needs. A future of mobility report recently released by Bell Labs Consulting, a division of Nokia Bell Labs, forecast that only 81 percent of 2020 global data (traffic) demand can be met unless the deployment of 5G networks is accelerated. The Summit highlights 5G technologies that will be needed to meet these future capacity demands.

The event also focuses on the next steps for bringing 5G to commercial readiness, and examines concrete examples of how technologies can be leveraged by a multitude of enterprises and industries to pursue high-growth IoT opportunities.

Nokia and the NYU WIRELESS Research Center are assembling executives from many diverse backgrounds and industry sectors. On the agenda are keynote speakers and panelists from AT&T, the Federal Communications Commission, C Spire, Intel, NTT DoCoMo, Qualcomm, Scripps Clinic and Institute, T-Mobile, Toyota, Verizon and Vodafone.

Nokia will be highlighting its 5G ready, commercially available AirScale Radio Access to support initial deployments of 5G in 2017, as well as advancements in end-to-end network slicing. It will also show mmWave small cells that are fully autonomous, can be deployed anywhere and deliver the low latency and flexibility critical to the IoT.

Ted Rappaport, the Ernst Weber/David Lee Professor of Electrical Engineering at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering and founder of NYU WIRELESS, said: "Global standard bodies and major companies and universities throughout the world have realized that multi-Gigabit per second mobile communications will soon be a reality, with no fundamental limits imposed by the laws of physics. This is an exciting time for the wireless industry as a transformational era lies before us. We are pleased to play a major role as a convener and producer of basic knowledge to bring wireless into its renaissance over the next several years, and are deeply grateful to Nokia and the 17 industrial affiliate sponsors of NYU WIRELESS who support our work and allow us to produce the Brooklyn 5G Summit every year."

Marcus Weldon, president of Nokia Bell Labs and Nokia CTO, said: "Nokia has been working on 5G technologies and architectural principles for almost a decade. This work is now bearing fruit to profoundly change human existence by allowing the ability to access everything, understand everything and control everything. We are working with operators to create pre-standard implementations and will start trialing 5G networks in 2017 to test performance and new business models. This will define the right 5G standards, based on a clear understanding of commercial and human value, rather than simple technological innovation. The Brooklyn 5G Summit is a critical forum to help achieve these goals."
